CALLING JESUS “LORD” MUST BE MORE THAN LIP SERVICE

“Why do you call me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and not do what I tell you?” (Luke 6:46 ESV).

Jesus challenged His listeners with a piercing question: Why confess Me as Lord while refusing to obey Me? True faith is not just verbal acknowledgment but demonstrated through obedience. Jesus followed this statement with an illustration of two builders—one who builds his house on a solid foundation by obeying Jesus’ words and another who hears but builds without obeying, only to see his house collapse when storms come (Luke 6:47-49).

Jesus taught that obeying His word would not prevent life’s storms, but it would build a strong foundation that would endure any storm. However, the one who only pays lip service to Jesus as Lord, not doing what He says, will be swept away when storms come. A faith that is all talk but lacks obedience will not stand the tests of life. True discipleship is marked by living out His commands, proving by our actions that Jesus is truly our Lord.

It’s easy to say “Jesus is Lord,” but does our daily life reflect that He truly is? If we only acknowledge Him with our lips yet fail to follow His teachings, we are like the foolish builder who had no foundation. When trials and hardships come, our lives will fall apart. However, if we build our lives on obedience to His Word, we will stand firm through any storm.

Obeying Jesus is not about rule-keeping but following. Are we daily seeking direction from Jesus, aligning our actions with His commands? Are we quick to listen to His Word and put it into practice? Today, let’s examine areas of our lives where we have been reluctant to obey Him and take a step of faithful obedience to follow Him in everything.

PRAYER: Dear Father, we confess that Jesus is our Lord, and we desire to follow Him wholeheartedly. Strengthen us through Your Spirit to walk in obedience, not just in words but in action. May our lives bear the fruit of true discipleship, proving our love for You through obedience. Help us to stand firm in the storms of life by building on the solid foundation of Christ. In Jesus’ name, amen.
