‘So Abraham called the name of that place, “The LORD will provide”; as it is said to this day, “On the mount of the LORD it shall be provided.”’ (Genesis 22:14 ESV).
Abraham named the place where he took Isaac to be sacrificed in obedience to the LORD’s command, “Jehovah-Jireh,” which is Hebrew for the “LORD will provide.” The name was given in praise of the LORD’s provision of a sacrifice in place of Abraham’s son. This became a well known name in the region of Mount Moriah where at a later time, Solomon built the Temple and even later, Jesus, God’s only Son, was crucified.
The LORD has indeed provided a lamb in place of Isaac and in place of all those who believe. This lamb is Jesus, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sins of the world (John 1:29). Jesus took our sin, our death, and our separation that we might receive His righteousness, His eternal life, and His relationship with the Father.
Have you received the Lord’s provision? For if you have received Jesus, you have received all things. As the apostle Paul wrote to the Romans, “If God is for us, who can be against us? He who did not spare his own Son but gave him up for us all, how will he not also with him graciously give us all things?” (Rom. 8:31-32).
What need do you have today? Have you called on the Lord? Have you called on Jehovah-Jireh? As Paul said to the Philippians, “But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus” (Phil. 4:19).
PRAYER: Dear Father, we have received Your Lamb, Christ Jesus. In Him, we have received all that we need. Help us to trust in Your provision. For we sometimes worry that we won’t have enough, or that we won’t survive a difficult situation. Forgive our doubt. Forgive our forgetting to trust in Your faithful provision. We look to You to supply all our need. In Jesus’ name, amen.
