‘And they were astonished beyond measure, saying, “He has done all things well. He even makes the deaf hear and the mute speak.”’ (Mark 7:37 ESV).
The crowds that followed Jesus as He passed through the Decapolis (“Ten Cities”) were “astonished beyond measure” at Him. These cities were founded by Greek colonists and were given favor under Roman rule. The gospel writer Mark tells this story after sharing a previous encounter Jesus had with a Greek woman in Tyre and Sidon who begged Him to free her daughter of a demon.
These stories are predictive of how the gospel will go out from Jewish to Gentile lands and be more quickly accepted in the latter. People who have no knowledge of Jesus are still “astonished” when they hear the good news about Him. For He “has done all things well.” This is why we must carry the gospel out to every people group, so that everyone has heard.
If Jesus does “all things well,” then we can trust Him with every aspect of our lives. Whether we are facing uncertainty, waiting for answers, or struggling with circumstances beyond our control, we can rest in the truth that He is working all things together for our good (Romans 8:28). Just as the Gentiles marveled at His power and grace, we too can respond with faith and obedience. Let this truth motivate us to share the gospel, knowing that Christ is still ready to astonish people today with His saving power. Who in your life needs to hear about Jesus? How can you demonstrate His goodness in word and deed this week?
PRAYER: Dear Father, we are thankful for Your Son, Jesus, who does all things well. Thank You for opening our eyes to see Your goodness and grace. Help us to trust You more deeply, knowing that You are working even when we cannot see it. Give us boldness to share the gospel, that others may also be astonished by Your love and power. Use us to bring Your truth to those who have never heard. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
