“Son of man, I have appointed you as a watchman for Israel. Whenever you receive a message from me, warn people immediately” (Ezekiel 3:17 NLT).

WHO ARE THE WATCHMEN FOR OUR TIME? God called Ezekiel to be a prophet and a “watchman” for Israel. A “watchman” was to keep watch over the camp during the night to sound a warning should danger appear. Ezekiel’s “watchman” duties however, were to keep watch to warn his people of sin and judgment, and

“Son of man, let all my words sink deep into your own heart first. Listen to them carefully for yourself. Then go to your people” (Ezekiel 3:10-11 NLT).

LET GOD’S WORD SINK DEEPLY INTO YOUR HEART FIRST When God gave a word to Ezekiel, he was instructed to receive it into his own heart first, before sharing it with other people. This is still the best instruction for those that would share God’s Word with others. First apply it to your own heart

“So now Jesus and the ones he makes holy have the same Father. That is why Jesus is not ashamed to call them his brothers and sisters” (Hebrews 2:11 NLT).

HOW JESUS HAS CHANGED OUR STATUS Receiving Christ’s sacrifice on the cross as payment for our sins we are made children of God. This spiritual transaction changes our status in at least three ways: 1) FROM SINFUL TO RIGHTEOUS – Christ took our sin upon Himself and the Father counted His righteousness as ours for

“I called on your name, Lord, from deep within the pit” (Lamentations 3:55 NLT).

PRAYERS FROM THE PIT The prophet Jeremiah had been cast into a pit because of his preaching. His own people hated the word he preached so much, that they cast him into a cistern, which “had no water in it, only mud, and Jeremiah sank down into the mud” (Jer. 38:6). If it hadn’t been

“Your prophets have said so many foolish things, false to the core. They did not save you from exile by pointing out your sins. Instead, they painted false pictures, filling you with false hope” (Lamentations 2:14 NLT).

BE WARY OF PREACHING THAT GIVES FALSE HOPE Jeremiah lamented the failure of Judah’s prophets to preach God’s Word and to call His people to repentance of their sin. Instead they filled the people with false hope. The last days of Jerusalem before its fall to Babylon were marked by a people with “itching ears”

“When God our Savior revealed his kindness and love, he saved us, not because of the righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He washed away our sins, giving us a new birth and new life through the Holy Spirit” (Titus 3:4-5 NLT).

NOT BECAUSE OF US BUT BECAUSE OF HIM Be careful not to judge unbelievers as if you are better than they. Remember that God saved us not according to us, but according to Jesus. We have not earned salvation, nor are we able to work at keeping it. It is the mercy and grace of

“For the grace of God has been revealed, bringing salvation to all people” (Titus 2:11 NLT).

THE GRACE OF GOD SHINING FORTH The unmerited favor of God has been revealed in Christ, so that all humanity might be saved, both those of low estate and those of high, whether far or near. This grace of God is revealed in the gospel of God (See Col. 1:6). It is sufficient to save

“I left you on the island of Crete so you could complete our work there and appoint elders in each town as I instructed you” (Titus 1:5 NLT).

TITUS REMEMBERED ON CRETE Although it is uncertain when the apostle Paul visited the island of Crete, that he did visit it, and that he left Titus behind to establish its church, is a matter of history. Paul’s pattern would have been to do this work himself, but some pressing concern must have caused him

“Work at telling others the Good News, and fully carry out the ministry God has given you” (2 Timothy 4:5b NLT).

FULFILLING THE MINISTRY GOD HAS GIVEN YOU As Paul faced the real possibility of execution for preaching the gospel, he gave final instructions to Timothy. He wanted Timothy to be unafraid of suffering and willing to work hard for the sake of the Good News. Like a captain issuing orders to one of his men,

“The prophet Jeremiah gave a message to Baruch son of Neriah in the fourth year of the reign of Jehoiakim son of Josiah, after Baruch had written down everything Jeremiah had dictated to him” (Jeremiah 45:1 NLT).

DOES GOD HAVE A WORD FOR YOU? After giving prophecies for the Jewish remnant and the nations surrounding Israel, God gave Jeremiah a specific message for his assistant, Baruch. Jeremiah may have been God’s mouthpiece, but Baruch was his pen. For he had written down every word that Jeremiah dictated to him from the Lord.
