“The Lord your God has chosen you to be a people for his treasured possession, out of all the peoples who are on the face of the earth” (Deuteronomy 7:6 ESV).
Moses told the Israelites that the Lord would deliver seven nations greater and mightier than they over to them when they entered the Promised Land. He would do this because He had chosen them to be His “treasured possession,” His “special people” (KJV) in all the earth. Yet, Moses quickly corrected any misconception this might imply, lest they think God saw something inherently special in them. He didn’t. In fact, they were the “least of all peoples.”
They weren’t special because of who they were. They were special because of who God is. They were special because He had “set His love” (7) on them. It was God’s love that made them special to Him.
As the apostle Paul declared, “but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us” (Rom. 5:8).
Not many of us were special or wise or noble before we were called. But the Lord has chosen the “weak things of the world,” that He might get the glory (1 Cor. 1:26-31). Therefore, let us not glory in ourselves. Let us glory in the Lord! For it is the Lord’s love for us that makes us special.
PRAYER: Heavenly Father, we are Your children. For You have chosen us and love us. Not because of who we are, but because of who You are. Therefore, we glory in You. We boast in You, O Lord. Fill us afresh with Your Spirit and power this day that we may glorify you in all that we say and do. In Jesus’ name, amen.
