This was John the Baptist’s confession concerning Jesus, “Anyone who believes in God’s Son has eternal life.” John said this in response to his own disciples who were concerned that more people were being baptized by Jesus than John. In fact, Jesus wasn’t baptizing. His disciples were. No matter. John rightly understood the point. His disciples were jealous of another’s ministry growth. John rebuked them. He recognized that his ministry wasn’t to build a following to himself, but to prepare the way for the Lord Jesus. He said, “I must decrease and He must increase.” If only more ministry leaders today understood this. Our ministries don’t exist to exalt ourselves. They exist to make Jesus famous! For Christ is the only One who can give us eternal life.

While this psalm has no inscription, it certainly sounds like that great song writer and musician, David. The psalm opens and closes with him talking to himself, encouraging his own soul to “Bless the Lord, O my soul!” After singing of how all creation blesses the Lord and proclaims His glory, David expresses his desire to join the chorus for his entire life. Also prominent, is David’s hope that God will be pleased with his song, as he performed for an audience of One. Whose applause do you seek?

I praise God not because I wish to bargain with Him. I praise Him because He is God and worthy of my worship. Even when suffering and death cross my path, my heart is determined to praise Him. For He is God and there is no other. Today, I praise Him for letting me see my grandson Conner, if only for a moment. He was always Yours. Now we return him to You. Blessed be Your Name our LORD.

What John the Baptist said when asked about Jesus. I like the KJV for this: He must increase, but I must decrease.” Let’s pray this prayer together today: “Lord, I want less of me and more of You.”
