March 29, 2012

The word “miser” is the root for “miserable.” If you want to know true joy, be a giver. Givers don’t worry about how their needs will be met. They leave that up to God.

“Now go out where it is deeper, and let down your nets to catch some fish.” (Luke 5:4)

March 21, 2012

What Jesus told Peter after he’d spent all night fishing and caught nothing. Are you tired and feeling like a failure after working hard without success? It seems reasonable that you should take time off. Yet, Jesus often calls us to go deep at times like this. Listen to Him. Don’t give up. Go deeper!

“The Scripture you’ve just heard has been fulfilled this very day!” (Luke 4:21)

March 20, 2012

What Jesus said after reading from Isaiah in His hometown synagogue. Jesus was the fulfillment of over 300 OT prophecies. Yet, there are many more Scriptures yet to be fulfilled. Every one of them has a date stamp on it that only God can read. On that day, it will be fulfilled. That’s why God’s people must always be ready. Today could be the Day!

March 18, 2012

Luke wrote his gospel so that it’s historical context was clear. He named the Roman Caesar, the Judean king, even the Jewish high priest at the time when John the Baptist started preaching. This does not read like myth, as some suggest. It is true history. We can depend on God’s Word.

Jesus grew mentally, physically, spiritually and socially. As you look at yourself in these 4 areas, which needs some growth? Are you healthy in these 4 areas? Are you growing more like Jesus?

“Everyone who heard about it reflected on these events and asked, ‘What will this child turn out to be?’ For the hand of the Lord was surely upon him in a special way.” (Luke 1:66)

March 15, 2012

How the people responded to the birth of John the Baptist. Oh, that every child would be welcomed with such expectation!

“Then the angel said, ‘I am Gabriel! I stand in the very presence of God. It was he who sent me to bring you this good news!'” (Luke 1:19)

March 13, 2012

Gabriel appeared to Zechariah during his time of Temple service. He came to announce the imminent births of both John the Baptist and Jesus. This was what Israel had long awaited. Yet, Z doubted. Do you doubt God’s good news?

Whatever Is Praiseworthy: Conquering Our Consumer Culture

February 26, 2012 | Luke 12 | consumerism

Pastor Gary Combs concludes his 8-week sermon series entitled War of the Worldviews with this message about how to overcome consumerism. Taken from Luke 12, Pastor Gary teaches from the story where Jesus tells about a farmer who was consumed by his possessions. His fields produced an abundant crop but his reaction was typical of many. He said, “I’m going to tear down my barns and build bigger ones, then I’ll store up my goods so that I’ll have plenty to enjoy when I retire.” Today’s culture would call him a great success, Jesus calls him a “fool.” His evaluation of his possessions was really out of whack. Jesus warned against the greed of consumerism and challenged His hearers to be rich towards God. We can Conquer the Culture of Consumerism by being rich towards God.

What Gifts Should We Give?

December 18, 2011 | Luke 2 | christmas

Pastor Gary Combs continues the NOEL series with this message from Luke’s gospel. In the book of Luke, the birth of Jesus was recorded in its historical context with special attention given to show both the humble circumstances of His birth and the glory of His person as the Messiah, the Christ, the Son of God. In Luke’s gospel the angel of the Lord invites the shepherds to come celebrate the birth of the Messiah. They came and it changed them and all they came into contact with afterwards. The Lord still invites us to come celebrate the Christ. We can say yes to His invitation and invite others to join us by giving and loving like Jesus.
