“For truly, I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not an iota, not a dot, will pass from the Law until all is accomplished” (Matthew 5:18)

January 5, 2013

The Jews often referred to the whole of the Hebrew Bible as the Torah (the Law), even though it was the title to the first five Mosaic books only. Here, Jesus is saying that the Word of God is more permanent, lasting, and dependable than heaven and earth themselves. Jesus had such a high view of Scripture that He said even the smallest stroke of the pen would not only be preserved but fulfilled. If Jesus has such a view of Scripture, how should we regard God’s Word?

“Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God” (Matthew 4:4)

January 3, 2013

Jesus was tempted by Satan in the same three ways as Eve. However, Jesus responded with Scripture to Satan’s attack. Jesus doesn’t question God’s Word, He stands on it! Who do you want to be like, the one who doubts the Word or the One who stands on it?

August 19, 2012 | Matthew 20:25-28 | generosity, three commitments

Pastor Gary Combs concludes the 4-part series “iCommit” with this message from Matthew 20. In the book of Matthew, the mother of James and John asked Jesus for seats of authority for her sons on either side of Jesus. Jesus told her and all the disciples that following Him was not a call to be great in the way the world sees things. He said that the greatness they were called to was called servanthood. He told them to follow His example of service by being willing to contribute all that they had in serving God.

February 14, 2012

This is not a new list of “don’ts” to keep. These commands are the description of Kingdom living for those who call Christ, King. They are a like landmarks confirming that you are following the way of the Master. Only those who have died and been reborn in Christ can keep these.

“Give to Caesar what belongs to Caesar, and give to God what belongs to God” (Matthew 22:21)

February 2, 2012

God has ordained human kings and nations. They are ministers of justice (albeit imperfect). Jesus said to “render unto Caesar.” He didn’t call them to lawlessness. As April 15th approaches and we begin a presidential election year, remember your dual citizenship status.
