REJOICE, FOR GOD SEES YOUR AFFLICTION This Psalm of David teaches us to choose gladness and worship, while giving our troubles to God. David wrote that God had “seen” his trouble. In other words David had stopped thinking about his affliction and had given it to God for His consideration.   This was how the

“The LORD is my light and my salvation—whom should I fear? The LORD is the stronghold of my life—of whom should I be afraid?” (Psalms 27:1 HCSB).

OVERCOMING FEAR BY DECLARING YOUR FAITH IN GOD David wrote this powerful declaration of confidence in the Lord, revealing how he faced his fears. For David, like any man, had fears, yet he overcame them by faith in God. There are at least three fears implied here, that are common to man, that David chose

“The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky proclaims the work of His hands” (Psalm 19:1 HCSB).

THE WITNESS OF CREATION When David looked at the sun and blue sky by day or the moon and stars at night, he did not worship them. No, he saw how they bore witness of God’s glory and the wonder of His creation. For David, the sun, moon and stars were not objects to be

PETER’S FIRST SERMON TEXT This psalm of David was quoted by the apostle Peter (Acts 2:25-36) as a biblical proof that Jesus Christ, Son of David, was prophesied to rise from the dead without seeing “decay.” Peter preached this sermon on the day of Pentecost and 3,000 Jews from all over the Roman world came

Receiving Children as a Gift from God

July 18, 2021 | Psalm 127:1-5 | parenting

Let’s admit it. Parenting can be very scary! Now, I realize that not everyone here is a parent. Whether you’re single, married w/o kids, or you’re empty nesters, what the Bible teaches about parenting is still relevant. Because as a church family, we all can help support and encourage the raising up of the next generation.

In Psalm 127, Solomon wrote about the necessity of recognizing the Lord as the One builds families and watches over them. As a result, he wrote that children are to be received as a gift from the Lord. We can receive our children as a gift from the Lord.

“The helpless entrusts himself to You; You are a helper of the fatherless.” (Psalms 10:14b HCSB).

THE FATHER TO THE FATHERLESS The psalmist began by questioning where God is when the wicked persecute the poor. For the wicked appear to prosper and take advantage of the poor. Like a lion they attack the helpless who have no apparent protection.   But God does observe their trouble and grief. The helpless are

“For You, Lord, bless the righteous one; You surround him with favor like a shield” (Psalm 5:12 HCSB).

SURROUNDED WITH GOD’S SHIELD OF FAVOR David wrote of God’s loving-favor and blessing as a shield that surrounded him, both protecting him from harm without, and comforting him with acceptance within. It may seem unusual to visualize God’s love and favor as a shield, which is a defensive weapon of war. But David felt surrounded

“I lie down and sleep; I wake again because the Lord sustains me” (Psalm 3:5 HCSB).

THE LORD SUSTAINS US EVEN WHILE WE SLEEP David wrote this psalm after he had to flee from his son, Absalom, who sought to overthrow him and take the crown. Surely he was overcome by grief from this betrayal. Sleep had no doubt eluded him during this time. Yet, he finally lay down and slept.

“Hallelujah! Sing to the Lord a new song, His praise in the assembly of the godly” (Psalm 149:1 HCSB).

WHY SING A NEW SONG TO THE LORD? The Scripture often instructs that a “new song” be sung to the Lord. In fact, this is in the Bible a total of nine times: six in the Psalms, once in Isaiah, and twice in Revelation. So, why does the Lord desire a new song from his

“Do not bring Your servant into judgment, for no one alive is righteous in Your sight” (Psalm 143:2 HCSB).

NO ONE IS RIGHTEOUS BEFORE GOD David understood that he could not stand before the Lord as one accused. For he was a sinner, as are we all. So, he called on the Lord’s “unfailing love” (v.8) instead of His judgment. God’s “unfailing love” or “chesed” as it is in the Hebrew, is His covenantal
