Heart for God

November 8, 2020 | Psalm 96:1-9

We are called to make disciples of Jesus. What should those disciples look like? The first and most important thing is they should have a growing Heart for God.

In Psalm 96, David taught the Israelites how to worship with a true heart for God. We can worship with a true heart for God.

“They did not believe His word, but complained in their tents, and did not heed the voice of the Lord” (Psalm 106:24-25 NKJV).

DO YOU HAVE AN ATTITUDE OF GRATITUDE OR GRUMBLING? It wasn’t external enemies that kept the Israelites out of the Promised Land. It was their internal grumbling among themselves. They complained against the food and against their leaders, but really they complained against God. So He allowed the grumblers to die in the wilderness, while

“For as the heavens are high above the earth, so great is His mercy toward those who fear Him; as far as the east is from the west, so far has He removed our transgressions from us” (Psalm 103:11-12 NKJV).

THE SIZE OF GOD’S MERCY David attempted to describe the size of God’s mercy by comparing it to the heavens and earth. He imagined the height of God’s mercy as rising as high as the heavens, and the breadth of His mercy being as wide as the “east is from the west.”   Yet, in

“Righteousness and justice are the foundation of Your throne; Mercy and truth go before Your face” (Psalm 89:14 NKJV).

WHO CAN APPROACH THE THRONE OF GOD? The throne of a human king or judge is elevated by wood or stone and often ornamented by images and symbols to suggest their authority and judgment. But the foundation of the Lord’s throne is “righteousness and justice.” His throne is elevated by His character, which is pure

Shape Me

October 18, 2020 | Psalm 51:7-17 | prayer

This week, we’re going to learn to pray, “Lord, shape me.” Prayers where we ask God to examine our inner life to make sure we are in alignment with His will.

In Psalm 51, which David wrote after being confronted with his sin of adultery with Bathsheba, he prayed that God would forgive him of his sin and shape him for His glory. We can pray that God would shape us for His glory.

“O Lord, God of my salvation, I have cried out day and night before You. Let my prayer come before You; Incline Your ear to my cry” (Psalm 88:1-2 NKJV).

THE PERSISTENT PRAYER FOR GOD’S PRESENCE The Lord is the God of salvation. Yet we must place our faith in His Son, Christ Jesus, to be able to call Him “my” salvation. In Christ, we that were far away, have now been brought near. Although we may feel at times as the psalmist did, that

Search Me

October 11, 2020 | Psalm 139:23-24 | prayer

This week, we’re going to learn to pray, “Lord, search me.” Prayers where we ask God to examine our inner life to make sure we are in alignment with His will.

In Psalm 139, David prayed that God would search him so that he might bring his life into alignment with God’s will. We can pray for God to search us that we might align our lives to His will.

“Oh, do not remember former iniquities against us! Let Your tender mercies come speedily to meet us, For we have been brought very low.” (Psalm 79:8 NKJV).

HOW LOW MUST YOU GO? The Psalmist cried out to God that he and his people had been brought very low. They had hit rock bottom and could not get up without God’s help. He prayed that God would no longer remember their sins and that He would show them tender mercy. He begged God

“In the day of my trouble I sought the Lord; My hand was stretched out in the night without ceasing; My soul refused to be comforted” (Psalm 77:2 NKJV).

WHEN DO YOU PRAY? When do you seek the Lord? The psalmist spoke of a day when he “sought the Lord” as a “day of my trouble.” He described his trouble sleeping and the state of his soul which seemed beyond comfort and encouragement. On such a day, he “cried out to God” (v.1).

Show Me

October 4, 2020 | Psalm 25:1-7 | prayer

What if we began to pray “dangerous prayers?” Prayers that cry out to God for an answer? Prayers that are God-sized and God-willed? Prayers that stretch us outside of our comfort zone? If we were to begin praying “dangerous prayers” together as a church, who knows what would happen!
In Psalm 25, King David prayed that God would show him how to get God’s perspective on life. We can pray that God will show us His perspective on life.
